Multiplicity of Roles: The Pronoun in the Ao Dialect of Yoruba


The pronoun in the Ao dialect of Yoruba language performs multiple roles. These roles are both semantic and syntactic. One form of the short subject pronouns is employed as the continuous aspect marker in an affirmative sentence, another form of these pronouns is used as the secondary negator in a negative sentence. We shall, in this paper, examine the various roles of the pronoun in Ao. Keywords: pronoun, semantic roles, aspectual meaning, negative meaning.
